If his grace is an ocean, we're all sinking...

So I know I have already written a blog on “How He Loves” by the David Crowder Band, but ever since I have come back from our beach vacation, this has been on my heart. Here we go :-)

As I was sitting on the beach looking out at the Atlantic Ocean, I was just overwhelmed by the thought of how big our God really is! I mean, the ocean is huge, and as its waves were crashing on the shore it just seems like something so powerful and uncontrollable. Just think about that for a second, then think about the fact that God set the boundaries to the ocean…think about the how Christ was able to calm the sea…wow, we serve a powerful God!!!

And of course, considering I’m always singing this song, it made me think of some of the lyrics to “How He Loves”. It was one line in particular, “If his grace is an ocean, we’re all sinking”. Something about actually seeing the ocean and how big and powerful it was, made this line hit me like a ton of bricks. Sitting right there on the beach, I was brought to tears as I thanked God for his grace. For some reason, I often view God’s grace as a conditional thing, you know, it covers most sin but you better not do anything too bad. Or sometimes, I even view it like a gas tank, like you can only go so far before your supply of God’s grace has run out, so don’t push it. But as I looked out over the ocean, I realized that God’s grace in too powerful for us to comprehend. It is too overwhelming for our simple minds. That is his grace was an ocean, it would be one so large and powerful, that it would be impossible for us not to get swept away by its currents. We are so unworthy.

Then, I moved down to where my family was playing in the waves and I sat on the sand. I drew my name in it and then a wave came and completely washed it away. You couldn’t even see any indentions. If anyone else walked by, they would have never known that I had even drawn it. Then my Dad said something that just overwhelmed me, he said, “You can do whatever you want in the sand, but the waves will just wash it away.” I know what you’re thinking, what is so great about that statement right? It had a profound meaning for me though. No matter how many times you draw something in the sand, the waves are still going to erase it. They are just that powerful. The sand is like our lives. No matter how many times we mess up, God’s grace is so powerful, that it completely erases it. Sure there are still consequences, but we don’t ever have to dwell in our sin. We also don’t have to feel shame about our sin. Sometimes, we can be our own worst enemy. God forgives us, but we can’t forget our sin, and we beat ourselves up about it. But we need to remember the example from the ocean. Just like the ocean erased the words I wrote in the sand so no one but me knew they were ever there, God’s grace erases our sin so often, the only person who is still judging us is ourselves. But when we let God’s grace completely overtake us, we can find freedom.

“If his grace is an ocean, we’re all sinking” I don’t know about you, but if God’s grace is an ocean, I want to drown…
